For the love of money?

Good news: the PR industry is booming, and if you’re a lucky candidate looking for the right match, recruiters will line up outside with flowers and candy.

Bad news: do you choose bachelor #1 or 2 or 3?

Inspired by Todd Defren’s recent social media PR post on PR divas and Kara Amit’s informative discussion at the last Young PRSA event,  I wanted to tackle the issue of how do you find your perfect agency.

From a marketer’s perspective of working at a technology PR agency but not being in PR, here are my tips:

  • Find an agency that you love, admire, and dare I say, worship.  You like the space they’re in, the clients they serve, and their growth potential for the next five years.
  • Love your team, and they will love you back.  Having a great environment and wonderful coworkers makes you want to get up in the morning and boosts your chances of promotion within the team.  I’ve seen ACs and AEs flourish under a great manager and with supportive teammates.
  • Make sure you have a say.  PR agencies may have a structured hierarchy, but if you have ideas or interests, follow them through and find a company that helps you carve your own unique path.
  • Have an interest in your clients.  You’re going to be pitching, writing press releases, and reporting on their behalf.  A genuine fascination with their industries will make you sound… more genuine.
  • Finally, be honest.  This is about finding the right situation for you.  You have to be there at least 9-5 day in and day out.  Trust me, the money ain’t worth it…
